One of the things talked about in this chapter is to study your spouse. This included making a list of those actions that truly please one another. What a great way to be thinking on all the positive character traits of your mate instead of dwelling on the negative ones as Satan would have us do. Another challenge would be to date your Mate and to get away for the weekend.

It is very clear that raising a spiritually strong family is directly related to a husband and wife team that is growing together in their love and romance for one another.

As parents, our major responsibility is to train our children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. We as parents are the ones who have the biggest impact on the lives our children because we spend the most time with them. Since we are on this assignment from God to effectively disciple our children, we must write down key objectives and review them every year. Effective training involves a plan and strategy, accountability and repetition. Then in times of battle we know what to do.

In this chapter, we are reminded to be alert to the fact that our enemy is a clever deceiver. If we want spiritually strong families we must do battle against the enemy within and the enemy without. Some ways to fight back would be to pray without ceasing. In this chapter, we are reminded to prepare our homes Saturday to be ready to attend church services on Sunday.

After the services we should continue to worship God in our hearts and our homes with praise and worship. Sunday is to be a day of refreshing our souls, reestablishing relationships in our families, and creating a quiet atmosphere where we can deepen our spiritual roots to be more fruitful for Jesus Christ.

They have been members of the Lehigh Valley Baptist Church for over 30 years. The 3 oldest children are married. Two boys and two girls are at home. Our 2 girls came from the Wonderful country of China. We love all our children immensely and enjoy a very happy fulfilled home. The Cashes want their kids to have time each week to spend with their church family, even in informal settings, in order to develop meaningful relationships with Christians of all ages.

The Cashes realize that Christian character is best developed by associating with others who love Jesus. A return to early Christian relational priorities will not only enhance personal spiritual growth, but also will improve the health of the Western church in what has now become a post-Christian culture.

While everyone focuses on why so many Millennials leave the church, the reasons that the rest choose to stay are just as fascinating. Intergenerational relationships topped the list of reasons young people remain connected to their faith communities. As Barna president David Kinnaman said ,. Cultivating intergenerational relationships is one of the most important ways in which effective faith communities are developing flourishing faith in both young and old.

Seeing the family of God as our primary family will also lead to less privileging of marriage, parenting, and family dynamics, and a more robust theology of singleness and celibacy. According to the New Testament, the family of God—not marriage—is the primary community in which spiritual growth occurs. Among the early Christians, marriage and singleness were both subordinated to the overarching model of the church as a family and to an overarching passion to accept the Great Commission and win the world for Christ.

Most adults will marry, but many will not. And those who do are marrying much later in life, often leaving a decade or more of single adulthood between adolescence and matrimony. There are also brothers and sisters among us who struggle with same-sex attraction. A Christian community that privileges the natural family over the family of God, and which extols marriage as the epitome of human relationships, has nothing to offer those who must commit to celibacy for a season—or even for a lifetime—in order to live in a manner pleasing to the Lord.

A biblical view of the church that places the family of God as the first relational priority situates both singleness and marriage under the overarching rubric of the family of God. It encourages singles and families from every background, young and old, to cultivate meaningful relationships with each another. And it mobilizes everyone in the community to use their gifts for the benefit of the Body of Christ to advance the gospel in a way that fits their current life situation. Joseph H.
